Lisbon, like a local

Don't miss

  • Alfama: Oldest neighbourhood. Get lost in the alleys. Fado music drifts from doorways.
  • Belem Tower + Jeronimos Monastery: Maritime history and Manueline architecture. Go early.
  • Miradouro da Graca / Miradouro da Senhora do Monte: Best sunset views over the whole city
  • Time Out Market: Food hall with top Lisbon chefs under one roof. Lunch is best.

Where to eat

  • Pastel de nata from Pasteis de Belem: The original custard tart. Queue moves fast. Eat warm with cinnamon.
  • A Cevicheria: Peruvian-Portuguese fusion. The ceviche is perfection.
  • Cervejaria Ramiro: Legendary seafood. Prawns, clams, steak sandwich to finish. Worth the wait.

Do this

  • Ride Tram 28: Rattles through Alfama and Graca. Touristy but still magical — go early.
  • Fado in Alfama: Live traditional Portuguese music in a tiny tavern. Emotional. Order wine.
  • Sunset at a miradouro with a Super Bock: The cheapest, best evening in Lisbon

Local tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes: the hills are no joke. Cobblestones are slippery when wet.
  • Tram 28 is a pickpocket hotspot. Keep valuables in a front zipped pocket.
  • Ginjinha (cherry liqueur): try a shot at A Ginjinha near Rossio. €1.50.
  • Sintra is a must day trip (40min train). Book Pena Palace in advance.
