Lagos, like a local
Don't miss
- Lekki Conservation Centre: Canopy walkway over mangroves. Africa's longest. Surprisingly peaceful inside Lagos.
- Nike Art Gallery: 5 floors of Nigerian art. Biggest private collection in West Africa.
- National Museum Lagos: Nigerian history and Benin bronzes. Modest but meaningful.
- Freedom Park: Former colonial prison turned arts/culture space. Live music nights.
Where to eat
- Jollof rice: The national dish. Every restaurant, every buka (local eatery) has their version. Nigerian jollof is undefeated.
- Yellow Chilli (Itafaji): Celebrity chef Sisi Yemmie's spot. Nigerian food elevated.
- Suya from a roadside mallam: Spiced grilled meat, newspaper wrapping, onions. Best after 8pm. Street corners across the city.
Do this
- Lagos nightlife — Victoria Island: Afrobeats at source. Clubs like Quilox, Hard Rock. Thursday-Saturday. Things don't start until midnight.
- Sunday at Elegushi Beach: Music, small chops, owambe (party) energy. The Lagos Sunday ritual.
- A boat ride to Tarkwa Bay: Escape the mainland chaos. Beach, calm water, local food.
Local tips
- Download Bolt before you land: it's more reliable than Uber in Lagos
- Lagos traffic ('go-slow') is legendary. Never plan tight schedules. Leave 2x the time you think you need.
- Power outages are common. Hotels and restaurants run generators: 'nepa' jokes are a way of life.
- 'Eko for show': Lagos is expensive by West African standards. Budget accordingly.
Know before you go
Best time
Nov-Mar (dry season). Dec is peak — Lagos comes alive for the holidays. Harmattan haze Dec-Jan brings cooler, drier air.
Getting around
Uber/Bolt are essential. Danfos (yellow minibuses) and BRT buses exist but chaotic. Traffic is Lagos's defining feature — budget 2-3x the estimated travel time.
Airport
LOS
Language
English (official) + Pidgin English (widely spoken). Yoruba, Igbo. Pidgin is the real lingua franca.
Money
NGN (naira). Cash still king in many places. POS (card terminals) available at most shops/restaurants. Transfer apps (OPay, Kuda) are popular.
Safety
Be street-smart. Don't flash wealth. Use Bolt/Uber, not random cabs. Stick to Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki for tourists. Avoid go-slows (traffic) in unfamiliar mainland areas at night.
