Just be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends.

**Gulangyu for charm.** A short ferry ride, but worlds away from the city’s chaos, Gulangyu is the place for a slower pace. This car-free island is a UNESCO World Heritage site, dotted with colonial architecture, winding lanes, and lush gardens.
