The Seychelles islands offer more than turquoise waters and palm-fringed beaches — although those are very much worth your time. But here's the thing: your stay will be shaped by which island you choose, each offering its own slice of paradise, from bustling local life to laid-back seclusion. Knowing where to anchor yourself can make all the difference.
## Where to stay
**Mahé for local life.** Start with the largest island, Mahé, particularly if you enjoy being close to the action. Victoria Market is a must for fresh produce and spices, but venturing beyond, Beau Vallon on the north coast is where you'll catch locals at the beach, especially on weekends. If you enjoy a bit of nightlife, head to Eden Island, where the marina hosts restaurants and bars without feeling tourist-trapped.
**Praslin for beaches.** Anse Lazio on Praslin regularly makes the 'world's best beaches' lists for a reason — yes, the sand is really that white, and the water that clear. But Praslin offers more than just sunbathing. The Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve is a UNESCO site where you can spot the famous coco de mer palms. Stay in Anse Volbert for easy access to both relaxation and adventure.
**La Digue for charm.** The smallest of the main islands, La Digue, is bicycle heaven — cars barely exist here. Anse Source d'Argent is the iconic photo-ready beach with its granite boulders, but La Digue’s real charm lies in its pace. Rent a bike and cycle to Grand Anse or Petite Anse for solitude. Make sure to stop by Chez Jules for a taste of authentic creole cuisine.
**Skip the resorts, go eco.** The big-name resorts are alluring, but consider eco-lodges on islands like Silhouette or Cousin. You'll get a more intimate experience with nature, be it giant tortoises or some of the rarest birds in the world. Sustainability is the real luxury here.
## When to go
April, May, October, and November are ideal — warm, but without the heavy tourist footfall or humidity. December to March sees more rain, while June to August is drier but busy.
Whether you choose to base yourself on Mahé, Praslin, or La Digue, remember to ask your hosts about their favorite spots. They'll know the local secrets to make your stay even more magical. Happy island hopping!
