Summer weekends in Sarande can seem like a singular scene: throngs of sun-seekers on the beachfront, drinks in hand, relishing the Albanian Riviera. But if you're up for venturing beyond the obvious, Sarande District promises pockets of quiet charm and local life that those sunbeds can't offer.
## Where to stay
**Ksamil, not Sarande proper.** Sure, Sarande's main drag is lively, but if you're after turquoise waters without the crowded beaches, shoot for Ksamil. The town is a 20-minute drive away and makes for a great base with its secluded islets and soft sands. Just be sure to explore the quieter stretch of Paradise Beach past the usual tourist knots.
**Butrint's doorstep, for a slice of history.** Staying near Butrint National Park is for the traveler who wants echoes of antiquity with their sunsets. You're a stone's throw from this UNESCO site, but also near Lake Butrint's calm, away from the frenetic pace of more touristic spots.
**Borsh for a different vibe.** For a change of pace, head north to Borsh. This village is all about long beach strolls and rustic charm, minus the fuss. The olive groves here are almost therapeutic; it's where you come for solitude and a bit of old-school Albania.
**Stay near Lekursi Castle for the view.** While the castle itself pulls in visitors for evening tours, the surrounding area is beautifully serene once the crowds thin. Getting a room with a view of the town and the Ionian Sea is worth the climb up.
## When to go
Late May to early July, and again in September. The sea is warm, the skies are clear, and you get to enjoy the district before the peak summer spillover.
Seek out a local taverna for advice or just a good story—it's worth the chat. Whether you're after a tucked-away cove or a vibrant town square, there's a spot in Sarande District with your name on it. Dive in beyond the obvious crowd pleasers.
