Sure, Punta Cana is synonymous with all-inclusive resorts and postcard-perfect beaches. But if you want your stay to feel like more than just a high-end nap in the sun, you have to know where to base yourself. The neighbourhood you choose will shape your experience, weaving in local charm, culinary delights, or even a touch of seclusion.
## Where to stay
**El Cortecito, not Bávaro Beach.** Bávaro is the heart of the all-inclusive scene, but El Cortecito just south offers a slice of actual local life. Here, you can stroll past colourful cafes, poke through the stalls at El Cortecito Flea Market, and maybe even strike up a chat with shop owners. Stay on Calle Pedro Mir if you can.
**Cap Cana for privacy.** If you're looking for seclusion and a touch of luxury, Cap Cana is where you go to hide away. It's upscale and meticulously planned but retains a sense of isolation that lets you truly unwind. Juanillo Beach is the spot to find your zen.
**Los Corales is the in-between.** Not quite as bustling as Bávaro nor as quiet as Cap Cana, Los Corales offers a balance. With charming streets and easy beach access, it’s great if you want a bit of everything without the extremes.
## When to go
December to April is peak season, with perfect weather but also the crowds. Go in May or early June for a quieter experience and still enjoy the sun without the throngs.
When you arrive, don't hesitate to ask your host about their favourite local spots, or simply wander and let Punta Cana reveal itself beyond the beaches. There's always a local café or a hidden cove waiting to be discovered. Happy exploring!}
