Oita isn't on everyone's radar, and that's its charm. While the masses flock to Kyoto or Tokyo, Oita sits quietly, offering a slice of Japan that's more local, more intimate, and yet wonderfully inviting. You won't find the crowds here, but you will find a city steeped in natural beauty and real life — from its famous hot springs to the serene coastline.
## Where to stay
**Beppu, not Oita City.** While Oita City itself is perfectly fine, it's Beppu — just a short hop away — that really captures the essence of the region. Known for its hot springs, Beppu is where you'll find more authentic ryokan experiences and the chance to mingle with locals unwinding after a long day. Stay close to the Kannawa area for easy access to the most atmospheric onsens.
**Yufuin's quiet magic.** For something more serene, Yufuin is your move. This small, artistic village is nestled in the foothills and offers a retreat-like atmosphere, with its charming streets lined with boutique cafes and galleries. The scenic Yufuin Floral Village and Lake Kinrin are must-sees, particularly at sunrise when the mist rises off the water. Skip the midday crowds and enjoy the tranquility at dusk.
**Tsurusaki, the coastal escape.** Head to Tsurusaki if you're looking for a little seaside air. It's less about the hot springs and more about the coastal views and fresh seafood. The area has a few lovely spots like Tsurusaki Park where you can enjoy a quiet afternoon. Local izakayas along the water serve some of the freshest sashimi around.
## When to go
Autumn is the perfect time — September through November. The temperatures are mild, and the changing leaves around Yufuin are stunning without the hordes. Avoid summer if you can; it's not the heat but the humidity that's formidable.
Oita is a place to experience slowly, allowing the subtle charm to seep in. Ask your ryokan host or a trusted local for their favourite hidden gems, and let yourself discover a Japan that's often overlooked but never forgotten. Explore, soak, and savour it all at your own pace.
