## Where to stay

**Naxos Town, but skip the port.** Sure, the port area is convenient, but it’s also where you’ll end up paying twice the price for a mediocre meal. Instead, wander into the labyrinth of the old town's Venetian Kastro. Stay near the Archaeological Museum for easy access to lively tavernas and quaint cafés, like the ones around Plateia Protodikeiou.

**Agios Prokopios, for the beach and the buzz.** If beach life and nightlife are your vibe, this is your spot. The stretch from Agios Prokopios to Agia Anna offers the best of both worlds. Lively bars and restaurants line the beachfront, and you’re only a short bus ride back to Naxos Town if you crave a change of scene.

**Apiranthos, for mountain escape.** Up in the mountains, Apiranthos provides a quieter, cooler experience. Stone-paved streets, traditional tavernas, and the scent of mountain herbs define this area. Stay here to explore hiking trails and to see a less-touristed side of Naxos.

**Plaka Beach, if you want it more relaxed.** Plaka has the beautiful sands and crystal waters without the crowds of Agios Prokopios. It’s the perfect spot if you want to relax with a good book or spend your days exploring the quieter side of the island.

## When to go

May to early July or September is ideal — the weather is warm enough to swim, but the crowds are manageable. August is frantic; unless you're keen to queue for everything, steer clear.
