If you're venturing to Maceio, the pull towards Ponta Verde is understandable. It's the picture-perfect beach with an endless stretch of coconut palms. But here's the rub: it's also where every other tourist flocks. To truly experience Maceio, you need to explore beyond the obvious.
## Where to stay
**Jatiuca, not Ponta Verde.** Just a short walk up the coast from Ponta Verde, Jatiuca offers a more relaxed vibe with its laid-back beach bars and local seafood spots. Wander along Avenida Álvaro Otacílio for charming seaside strolls, and grab a table at Massagueirinha for some of the best moquecas in town.
**Pajucara is your cultural hub.** While it’s known for its beach, Pajucara is also the cultural heartbeat of Maceio. Visit the local crafts market, Feira de Artesanato, for authentic souvenirs, and start your morning with a strong coffee at Café São Braz. It's lively but with enough local flavour to keep you engaged.
**Pontal da Barra for an artisan fix.** This neighbourhood isn't just about beachcombing. It's home to a community of artisans, where you can pick up unique lacework directly from the women who make it. Forget the crowded markets — this is where the real finds are.
**Forget about the old town.** Despite its historical buildings, the city centre can be a hassle with its congested traffic and lack of charm. Head back to the coast for a more enjoyable experience.
## When to go
Avoid the rain and crowds by visiting from September to November, a sweet spot when temperatures are warm, and the city hasn't yet been taken over by holidaymakers. January and February can be unbearably humid and crowded.
Choose your stay wisely, and you might just find a Maceio that resonates with the locals. Don't hesitate to ask the concierge or locals for hidden spots — they might just point you toward your next favourite café or secluded beach.
