Langkawi is not just palm trees and beaches — it's an island with distinct zones that each offer a different story. The neighbourhood you choose will decide whether you're sipping cocktails by the beach, hiking through verdant jungle, or exploring local night markets. The wrong choice, and you'll find yourself isolated miles from the action or overwhelmed by it.
## Where to stay
**Pantai Cenang, not Kuah.** Kuah is the administrative heart and ferry port of Langkawi, but it's far from the sandy idyll you came for. Pantai Cenang, on the other hand, is where the island vibrates. Walk the main strip for vibrant nightlife, seaside dining, and the Underwater World aquarium. It's a hop from the airport, but expect crowds.
**Datai Bay, not Tanjung Rhu.** Tanjung Rhu offers luxury with a side of isolation — perfect if you want silence. Datai Bay, though, merges lush rainforest with intimate beaches away from the hustle. It's home to the Datai Langkawi, a luxurious spot that feels like its own world.
**Kampung Kedawang, for local life.** Avoid the tourist traps and experience Langkawi like a local. This area is less about the beach and more about village life, rice paddies, and local eateries. Visit Kedawang Market for fresh produce or a casual dinner of nasi campur.
**Pantai Tengah, the quieter sibling.** Just south of Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah offers a more laid-back vibe — think fewer bars, more sunsets. It's ideal for families or those who want proximity to the action without living in it.
## When to go
November to March is peak season, with great weather and festivities. April to August is quieter, with good deals but high humidity and occasional showers.
Langkawi’s charm lies in its contrast. Once you've chosen a base, let the concierge suggest must-visit eateries or hidden beaches. Whether you find yourself at the Yellow Beach Café or wandering the mangroves, Langkawi has something up its sleeve for every kind of traveller. Ask around; the locals always know best.
