## Where to stay

**Oltrarno, not Santa Croce.** Santa Croce's basilica is beautiful, and the streets are choked. Head instead across the Arno to Oltrarno. Here, artisan workshops and quiet piazzas invite you to linger, and you can have a real aperitivo at Piazza Santo Spirito.

**San Frediano, for the night owls.** Skip the tourist traps of the Ponte Vecchio after dark. San Frediano, a short walk along the river, is where you’ll find lively bars and cool trattorias. The laid-back vibe keeps it local around Via Pisana.

**Campo di Marte, if you’re sporty.** Northeast and away from the tourist bustle, Campo di Marte is a residential area known for its stadium and local flair. After a day exploring the Mercato di Sant'Ambrogio, rest near the lush Piazzale Michelangelo, with views minus the crowds.

## When to go

Late April to May or September to October. The weather is divine, and you're dancing around the peak tourist load. August is sweltering, and the locals escape; follow their lead and avoid it.
