El Paso is the kind of city that surprises you. It doesn’t wear its heart on its sleeve like some louder Texan cities, but there's a subtlety here that whispers rather than shouts. If you pick the right neighbourhood, you'll find a city rich with stories, flavours, and a culture that's part Texan, part Mexican, and entirely unique.
## Where to stay
**Kern Place, not Downtown.** Downtown El Paso may have the convention centre and a couple of museums, but it's Kern Place that breathes life into the city. With its art deco architecture, tree-lined streets and proximity to the University of Texas at El Paso, Kern Place is where the locals go for coffee at Hillside Coffee & Donut Co. and late-night tacos at Chico's Tacos. It's vibrant, walkable, and authentically El Paso.
**Sunset Heights, for its history.** Overlooking the city, Sunset Heights offers a glimpse into El Paso's storied past. Stay here to walk along streets lined with historic mansions and to be close to the Museum of Archaeology. The area offers a residential feel without sacrificing proximity to nightlife, particularly at The Hoppy Monk, where you can sip on locally brewed craft beer.
**Mission Valley, if you want heritage.** Skip the commercialised allure of newer developments and head to Mission Valley for a genuine taste of El Paso’s roots. Explore the Mission Trail, which includes three of the oldest surviving Spanish missions in the United States. Stay near Ysleta and you’ll be close to L&J Cafe, a local institution for Tex-Mex cuisine.
**Skip the Airport area.** Unless you're catching a flight at dawn, there's little reason to stay near the airport. It’s functional, not charming, and you’re missing out on the cultural richness elsewhere.
## When to go
March through May, when the desert blooms and temperatures are mild. The summer can be oppressively hot, driving both tourists and locals indoors.
El Paso is a treasure trove of culture and history waiting to be explored. Dive into its neighbourhoods, chat with your hotel concierge, and pick up local tips—they might just lead you to your new favourite spot in the Sun City. Remember, sometimes the best experiences aren’t on the map.
