## Where to stay

**Matina, not downtown.** The downtown area around San Pedro Street is where you'll find City Hall and Rizal Park, but it's also where you'll be elbowing through a crowd of tourists. Instead, Matina offers a quieter vibe with easy access to the nightlife on McArthur Highway and funky spots like the Tori Grill.

**J.P. Laurel Avenue, near Abreeza.** Want a slice of local life without sacrificing modern comforts? This stretch connects you to Davao's upscale shopping at Abreeza Mall and the hidden coffee shop gems like Yellow Hauz. It's not the place for backpackers but perfect if you fancy a late-night bite at Davao's famed Pepperplate.

**Lanang for the seafront.** Skip the inland hustle and head for the breezy coastline along J.P. Laurel Avenue in Lanang. It's where the Grand Regal stands and where you can catch a banca for a day trip to Samal Island. A bit commercial, sure, but you can't beat the convenience.

## When to go

March to May is peak summer and ripe for beach escapes. The Kadayawan Festival in August is brilliant, but prepare for crowds.

Davao isn't a rush. Chat up the concierge at your hotel, whether you're at Seda Abreeza or a cozy Airbnb in Matina. They'll steer you toward the markets or recommend a jeepney route you might never have considered.
