Campinas is more than just a pit stop between São Paulo and the lush landscapes of Brazil's interior. It's a city with its own rhythm and character, and where you choose to stay can make all the difference. Whether you're here for its burgeoning tech scene, the laid-back parks, or just passing through to nearby destinations, Campinas has a neighbourhood for you.
## Where to stay
**Cambuí, the cosmopolitan heart.** Cambuí is Campinas’ answer to São Paulo’s Jardins, a district filled with tree-lined streets, upscale eateries, and some of the city's most stylish coffee spots. Avoid Avenida Orosimbo Maia at rush hour, but do pop into Café Container on Rua Major Sólon for a morning espresso. It's a vibrant area, but unlike the city's bustling downtown, it has a more relaxed pace.
**Sousas, not the city centre.** If you prefer a more relaxed vibe, head to Sousas. It's technically part of Campinas, but feels like a countryside retreat with its artisan bakeries and weekend markets. Skip the industrial suburbs and instead enjoy the tranquility and the local flavours at the Festa do Cabrito, a local festival for foodies.
**Barão Geraldo for university flair.** Known for housing the University of Campinas (Unicamp), Barão Geraldo is lively, young, and filled with energy. It's not polished — you'll find graffiti and student bars aplenty — but it's authentic. Try the local pizzeria, Pizzaria do Barão, for a casual night out.
**Taquaral for the lakeside ambiance.** Staying near Taquaral Park means morning strolls by the lake and the chance to partake in the local drum circles. It’s more residential, but offers a good balance of nature and local life. Just avoid the crowded weekends when the entire city seems to descend on the park.
## When to go
Campinas is most comfortable in the summer months of December to February — think warm days and lively evenings. July can get unexpectedly cool, so pack accordingly if you visit then.
Talk to your hotel concierge for more local tips or check out stay listings. Whether it's a boutique stay in Cambuí or a guesthouse in Sousas, make sure it reflects the Campinas you want to discover. Enjoy the journey!
