Bloomington, Indiana, isn't just IU and college bars. It’s a city with a lively arts scene, a surprising range of international cuisine, and trails that can take you deep into the Hoosier National Forest. The neighbourhood you choose decides whether you’re here for the scene, the serenity, or just a long weekend dive into Midwestern culture.
## Where to stay
**Downtown, not the mall area.** The mall area is convenient but soulless. Downtown, you’ll find local spots like the Buskirk-Chumley Theater and the Farmers’ Market on Morton Street. Nighttime means live music at The Bluebird or catching a film at IU Cinema.
**Near West Side for character.** This area is a treasure trove of historic homes and a short walk to the B-Line Trail. You’ll find Upland Brewing here, an essential stop for local brews, and the artisan shops along West Kirkwood Avenue offer unique finds you won’t get anywhere else.
**Elm Heights for a quiet stay.** This leafy neighbourhood is close enough to IU to walk but far enough to escape the student bustle. With its charming streets and serene atmosphere, you can enjoy a quiet coffee at Hopscotch Coffee on East Dodds Street.
**Skip South Walnut.** It’s lined with chain stores and lacks the character you’re looking for. Instead, explore the trails and parks around Griffy Lake for a dose of nature.
## When to go
April to June and September to October are primetime. Summer’s humidity can be rough, and fall is particularly lovely with the changing leaves.
Wherever you end up staying, ask locals for their favourite haunts or peruse the local guides. Your Bloomington might be a bit different than the next person’s, and that’s exactly the point.
