Batangas is often the weekend escape for Manila dwellers, and for good reason. It's got beaches and volcanoes, but also traffic — and you’ll want to dodge the crowds who think ‘Tagaytay’ is a synonym for weekend. Choose wisely, and you’ll either find yourself blissfully calm or inexplicably cranky.
## Where to stay
**Lian for low-key beach vibes.** Skip the chaos of Nasugbu and head instead to Lian. It's quieter, less touristy, and the beaches at Matabungkay are perfect for those relaxed afternoons with a cold drink in hand. Bypass the Saturday crowd on Matabungkay Beach Road, and settle into a spot on the sand during weekdays.
**Lipa for city conveniences.** If you want a mix of city and nature, Lipa is your pick. It's got the malls, the restaurants, and most importantly, the access routes to Mount Malarayat and Taal Lake. Stay around Ayala Highway to be close to both convenience and escape routes.
**Anilao for diving enthusiasts.** While most folks rush to Puerto Galera for diving, Anilao offers world-class dive spots without the frenzy. It’s a diver’s paradise, but non-divers might find it limited in terms of nightlife and activities. Stay at any cozy beachfront lodging around Barangay Bagalangit.
**Skip Batangas City itself.** The port area is congested and merely serves as a jumping-off point to better locales. If you need to spend a night, make it purely functional and head straight to your destination the next morning.
## When to go
November through February is ideal — it's cooler and you’ll avoid the summer holiday crowds. March to May gets unbearably busy, especially during Holy Week.
Ask a local innkeeper for their favorite hidden beach or try the seafood at Coral Beach Club in Lian. There’s always more to discover when you go beyond the obvious, so be bold and wander off the well-trodden path. Grab a map and let the adventure begin.
