The island of Bali might be the most vacationed spot in Indonesia, but that doesn’t mean each trip has to be the same. One man’s beach party is another’s tranquil yoga retreat, and it all depends on where you choose to stay. Forget Kuta's crowded chaos; your Bali experience will differ wildly between Ubud's lush interiors and the buzzy beachfronts of Seminyak.
## Where to stay
**Ubud for the soul searcher.** Ubud’s charm lies in its rice paddies and yoga studios. Skip the Monkey Forest Road shops unless you’re a fan of overpriced sarongs. Instead, head to Jalan Raya Ubud for authentic Balinese crafts and down to Alchemy for a raw organic brunch. Stay at the edge of town, where you can hear frogs croaking more than motorbikes revving.
**Seminyak for the socialite.** Seminyak’s beach clubs are legendary, but Potato Head and Ku De Ta aren’t where the locals hang. Stroll down Jalan Kayu Aya for boutique shopping, then tuck into a wood-fired pizza at Da Maria. Your ideal spot is close enough to the beach for an early morning swim, but tucked back enough to escape the thump of late-night DJ sets.
**Canggu for the digital nomad.** This is where the surf meets the keyboard. Batu Bolong is the heart of Canggu, brimming with co-working spaces like Dojo and the all-important smoothie bowl at Crate Café. Avoid the Echo Beach tourist traps and try the seafood BBQ at the more laid-back La Brisa.
**Nusa Dua for the family trip.** Nusa Dua's gated resorts offer peace of mind if you’ve got kiddos in tow. Stick to the quieter Geger Beach and take a day trip to Pandawa Beach for more space to run around. The Bali Collection complex is touristy and best avoided; instead, enjoy a seafood feast at Bumbu Bali.
## When to go
April to June and September are your best bets for good weather without the high-season crowds. July and August bring the tourists and the humidity, making those quiet spots feel busy.
Ask your hotel concierge about local events and festivals happening during your stay, or just kick back with a cocktail at Finns Beach Club and watch Bali do its thing. Real experiences await beyond the popular lists, so take a chance on something unexpected.
