Roccamelia Experience — Mazara Del Vallo

Location: Vicolo Vipera, 5 3, Mazara Del Vallo, IT

Emotional Journey Through Historic Atmospheres Roccamèlia is a fortress believed to have Templar origins. The stronghold was built upon the Norman walls of Mazara del Vallo, erected toward the end of the first millennium, and served as a defensive outpost protecting Porta Palermo, which in the Middle Ages was the city's main gateway. In the square in front of our residence was the marketplace where silk, spices, and all kinds of goods traded across the Mediterranean were sold. Fishing nets were also crafted within the complex; their weaving took place inside our Casa del Mare (House of the Sea), which, together with the other medieval dwellings, overlooks the courtyard. On the first floor stood the watchtower, portions of which now form the Knight's Suite and the Tower Suite. The latter features a beautiful terrace overlooking the rooftops of the old town. Connected to the medieval section is a mansion built in 1630 and renovated at the end of the 19th century in the Liberty style (Italian Art Nouveau). The five accommodations located in this wing of the complex feature vaulted ceilings, stucco decorations, and frescoes that pay tribute to the architecture and decorative arts of that era.
