Nairobi, like a local

Don't miss

  • Nairobi National Park: Wild lions, giraffes, rhinos — with the city skyline behind them. Nowhere else in the world.
  • David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage: Baby elephants. Daily feeding at 11am. Book online.
  • Giraffe Centre: Feed giraffes from a raised platform. Great for families.
  • Karura Forest: 900 acres of forest inside the city. Run, bike, or walk. Peaceful escape.

Where to eat

  • Nyama choma (grilled meat): Go to Carnivore or any roadside joint. Goat is the move.
  • Mama Oliech: Legendary fish and ugali. Obama ate here. Enough said.
  • K'Osewe Ranalo Foods: Luo cuisine. Fish, ugali, sukuma wiki. Packed with locals — always a good sign.

Do this

  • Masai Mara safari: 2-3 day trip. The wildebeest migration (Jul-Oct) is a once-in-a-lifetime event.
  • Nairobi's nightlife — Westlands: Live music, rooftop bars, Afro-house. Thursday-Saturday nights.
  • A matatu ride: Graffiti-covered minibuses blasting music. The heartbeat of Nairobi transport.

Local tips

  • Get an M-Pesa SIM (Safaricom) at the airport. You'll need it: most things run on mobile money.
  • Nairobi traffic is brutal. Budget 1-2hrs for cross-city trips during rush hour.
  • Altitude is 1,795m: it's cooler than you expect. Bring a jacket for evenings.
  • Java House and Artcaffe are the reliable cafe chains for coffee and wifi.

Uber/Bolt are the way. Matatus (minibuses) are cheap and authentic but chaotic. BRT (Thika Road) improving. Traffic is intense — avoid rush hour.

Airport

NBO

Language

English + Swahili (both official). Sheng (slang) is everywhere. English works fine.

Money

KES (shilling). M-Pesa is everywhere — more common than cash in many places. Cards at malls and hotels.

Safety

Be street-smart. Don't walk with your phone out. Use Uber at night. Westlands, Karen, Lavington are expat-friendly. CBD can be hectic — keep valuables hidden.
