Mexico City, like a local

Don't miss

  • Zocalo + Templo Mayor: The heart of the city. Aztec ruins next to a colonial cathedral. Mind-bending layers of history.
  • Chapultepec Castle: Hilltop castle with city views. Houses the National History Museum. Walk through Chapultepec Park.
  • Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul): Book weeks ahead. Small but deeply personal. Coyoacan is charming for lunch after.
  • Xochimilco: Floating gardens on trajineras (colourful boats). Mariachi bands float alongside. Bring snacks and drinks.

Where to eat

  • Tacos al pastor from a street stand: The spinning spit, the pineapple, the tiny tortillas. This is CDMX's soul food. El Huequito or any busy taqueria.
  • Mercado Roma or Mercado de San Juan: Food markets with everything. Exotic meats at San Juan, hipster food hall at Roma.
  • Cafe de Tacuba: Operating since 1912. Enchiladas, mole, tamales in a beautiful tiled dining room.

Do this

  • Dia de los Muertos (Nov 1-2): Altars, marigolds, face paint, parade. The city transforms. Book accommodation months ahead.
  • Lucha libre at Arena Mexico: Masked wrestling. Buy cheap seats, get a beer, scream with everyone. Friday nights.
  • Sunday in Coyoacan: Markets, street performers, churros, the plaza. Locals do this — so should you.

Local tips

  • Altitude is 2,240m: you'll feel it. Take it easy day one. Stay hydrated.
  • Street tacos are safe and delicious. If the taqueria is busy, the food is fresh. Trust the crowd.
  • Didi (Chinese ride-share app) often has better prices than Uber here
  • Roma Norte and Condesa are the neighbourhoods for cafes, restaurants, and walking. Base yourself there.
